Steve Goldberger - The Gentle Spirit Review by Marty Murray
"The Gentle Spirit" is the sixth studio album from local musician and songwriter Steve Goldberger, and unlike his previous solo releases, this one is a collection of his favourite cover songs. Having said that, don't expect any of these to be faithful re-creations of the originals. Steve loves putting his own spin on everything that he does, and this one is no exception.
Besides tunes from well-known artists, such as Neil Finn, Jackson Browne, Shania Twain, Don Henley, Tom Petty and Gordon Lightfoot, there are also a few tunes from some lesser-known Canadian lights, including Mike Lynch, David Leask and Duane Rutter.
The album was recorded in Steve's home studio, The Shed, and features many of the local musicians he performs with on weekends, from both his Old Winos and Niagara Rhythm Section bands. Steve supplies lead vocals, bass, various guitars and keyboards.
The record starts with "Don't Dream It's Over," a favourite by Crowded House. It doesn't stray too far from the original, but the addition of cello parts really gives it a nice spin. Jackson Browne's "Running On Empty" gets a nice makeover here, as does the Don Henley/Bruce Hornsby hit, "End Of The Innocence," which features violins in place of the original's synth parts. "You're Still The One," the Shania Twain wedding hit, is given a gentle reggae beat, which works really well. That reggae feel shows up again on Steve's cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "Song For A Winter's Night," which also features some nice country fiddle playing and takes the song in a totally unexpected direction.
Some of my favourites here are the lesser-known tunes. "Strong In Broken Places," by David Leask and Mary Ellen Beatty, has a lovely Celtic feel to it and is one of the record's standouts. Mike Lynch's "The Road Ahead" gets a heartfelt cover, as does the excellent "I Ain't No Good" by Duane Rutter. And just in time for Christmas, there's a jolly version of Buck Owens and Red Simpson's "Christmas Time's A Comin'" to end the album off on a happy and high note.
Steve Goldberger performs each Friday and Saturday night at the Old Winery Restaurant & Bar on Niagara Stone Road, Niagara-on-the-Lake, with a rotating series of well-known guests, and I highly recommend that you check them out sometime. The food is great, and the bar has a nice, comfortable, laid-back atmosphere, in addition to all the fantastic music. You can also pick yourself up a copy of "The Gentle Spirit" while you're there.

"Thanks for sending along your 'Gentle Spirit" record which arrived yesterday. Mary Ellen and I gave it a good listen last night and it was a real treat. So great to hear what you did with "Stronger". Love all your little Goldberger spins on the arrangement and it's so great to hear an artist get inside a song the way you did with heaps of emotion in your vocals. Great playing on all your various instruments and there's a fine accompanying cast of musical cats on the disc. It's certainly an honour to have our song alongside so many classic tunes and stellar writers. We enjoyed the ride!" - David Leask & Mary ellen Beatty, songwriters

"The whole thing sounds great... love the mixes...you did a fabulous job" - Maureen Brown, drummer
